Learning Pashto: Your Questions, Answered

Short, honest answers from Mohsin Ali, a native Pashto tutor with 16 years of teaching.

Is Pashto hard to learn?

Pashto is moderately hard for English speakers and much easier for Urdu, Persian or Arabic speakers. The script and a few sounds take practice, but everyday conversation is built from a small number of sentence patterns. Taught simply, most beginners say real sentences in their first lesson.

How long does it take to learn Pashto?

With two 30-minute lessons a week, most learners talk comfortably about daily life in 6–12 months. You’ll say your first real sentences in the very first lesson, and Urdu speakers are often faster. Reading fluency depends on your goal, from news and documents to poetry.

Should I learn Pashto or Dari?

Learn Pashto if you want to talk with Pashtun family, communities in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern and eastern Afghanistan, or for work with Pashto speakers. Dari is the other main language of Afghanistan and is closer to Persian. They are different languages, not dialects of one.

Which Pashto dialect should I learn?

Start with the dialect of the people you want to talk to. Mohsin Ali teaches Northern (Yousafzai/Peshawari) Pashto and standard Pashto, and adapts to the dialect a student needs. The grammar is shared, and learners of one dialect understand the others with a little exposure.

Can I learn Pashto online?

Yes. Live 1-on-1 lessons on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams work as well as in person, and you can learn from anywhere. Mohsin Ali teaches students in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf at times that suit their time zone.

How much do online Pashto lessons cost?

Mohsin Ali’s plan is $140 a month for two 30-minute 1-on-1 lessons a week, or one 60-minute lesson a week. It includes free WhatsApp help, tutorials and homework. The first lesson is free, and there is no payment until you’re satisfied.

How many letters are in the Pashto alphabet?

The Pashto alphabet has 44 letters and is written right to left in a script based on Arabic. Most letters are shared with Urdu and Persian; six are unique to Pashto: ځ, څ, ږ, ښ, ڼ and ۍ.

Can children learn Pashto online?

Yes. Children learn well in short, playful 30-minute lessons. Mohsin Ali teaches children one to one and siblings or families together, so heritage learners can talk with grandparents and relatives.
